CANTATAS
Sacred Music in Thuringia

The album Cantatas: Sacred Music in Thuringia unveils the soundscape of Lutheran Thuringia between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, reconstructed from the renowned 1968 discovery in the church of Großfahner, where a corpus of approximately three hundred cantatas had lain concealed.

The sacred works of Fr. Troll and Johann Theodor Roemhildt, presented here in their world premiere recording, stand alongside the Concerto for flute preserved in a copy by Pisendel, as well as the organ chorales of Johann Gottfried Walther and Friedrich Wilhelm Zachow, teacher of Handel.

Within a liturgical arc spanning from Christmas to Easter, trumpets, timpani, tenor and bass soloists, together with the period instruments of I CONTRAPPUNTISTI, restore the sophisticated and devotional character of the poetic music of the Bachian area.
