Gemischter Stil

During the Baroque period, a unique musical style was born in Germany, thanks to the borrowings from and the influence of the major musical trends of Italy and France.

To identify the German school style of the 18th century, a term Gemischter Stil, or mixed style, is used. It was born as a balanced combination of Italian influence and French elements (for certain instruments), filtered by German taste and education system.

It's always astonishing to see all these ingredients blend in such a natural and unique manner in the works by different composers and in various regions of Germany, forming a generally more severe and conservative style in the north and one more markedly influenced by Italian operatic music in the south, without losing the sense of continuity and local coherence. The differences, both subtle and noticeable, are explored in this program consisting of rare masterpieces and unpublished works that eagerly await being presented to grateful listeners after over 300 years of oblivion.
